Ultrasound is a noninvasive diagnostic method that using ultrasound (sound waves) emitted by special probes placed on the patient’s skin, allows visualization of organs, glands, blood cases, subcutaneous structures, and even muscle and tendon structures in numerous parts of the body.
When performing ultrasound, the area to be examined is moistened with a special gel, which is nontoxic and allows for better transmission of ultrasound through the human body. Ultrasound scans are used to study the neck (thyroid gland, lymph nodes), abdomen (liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas), pelvis (bladder, uterus, ovaries, prostate), veins and arteries (carotids, aorta), and muscular system (muscles, tendons, ligaments).
Ultrasound is not a dangerous investigation for children and pregnant women because it does not involve emission of X-type radiation. It can, therefore, be performed with some frequency if the need for repeated investigations is found in the presence of known pathologies for monitoring purposes.
For ultrasounds of the neck, muscles, and joints, no preparation is required, while for the study of the abdomen and pelvis, certain precautions are required, which are communicated at the time of booking. It is important to always carry previous investigations even other than the ultrasound, reports of specialist examinations or charts indicating surgeries performed, and it is also important to indicate medications taken.
