Dental arch CT is the study of one or both dental arches (upper and lower). The examination is brief (lasts only a few minutes) but it is important that the patient keeps the head absolutely still. In fact, upper and lower dental arch CT involves the study of the mandibular and maxillary bone with thicknesses of 1 mm or less. Any slightest movement could cause some images to be lost.
A CT scan of the dental arches is especially performed to assess the thickness and condition of the bone for possible implant placement and to assess the position of wisdom teeth (eighths) before their extraction. It is important, especially for implant surgery, that the dentist has accurate measurements so that the correct length of the implant to be placed can be decided.
The dentist’s choice to have the patient undergo a CT scan, instead of the classic dental overview, is dictated by the quality of the images provided by the aforementioned, which allows study in the three planes of space and then reconstructions in three dimensions (3D).
At the Poliambulatorio Oberdan, DentalScan CT scans are performed with images on both X-ray and CD.
