The treatment of herniated and protruding discs with Ozone was introduced in Italy, starting in 1980, thanks to an orthopedist, Dr. Cesare Verga.
At the time, the treatment involved infiltrating the paravertebral muscles with a very high volume of gas. The therapeutic results were disputed by the scientific world, but patients still healed. In 1984 Dr. Verga presented his results at a medical congress receiving not exactly high praise, but patients continued to heal. Word of mouth from healed patients was followed by curiosity from doctors.
Beginning in the 1990s, the first scientific articles began to appear in medical journals with progressively more case histories. Much of the medical world continued to consider the technique ineffective, nevertheless patients continued to recover.
Ozone therapy arrived in the early 2000s, with now impressive case histories, thanks in part to the tireless work of a neuroradiologist from Brescia, Dr. Matteo Bonetti, motivated by the esteem of an undisputed authority in world neuroradiology, Prof. Marco Leonardi. Over a period of 10 years, hundreds of papers were published with proper data collection criteria and statistical analysis of the results: in a word, scientific.
The health care world, while understandably reluctant to embrace a gas-based therapy, gradually became curious. Word of mouth was joined by referrals of patients to our Ozone Therapy clinics from fellow physicians. In those years, a more thorough analysis of the side effects associated with the administration of Oxygen-Ozone mixtures for the treatment of herniated and protruding discs and, more generally, of any infiltrative treatment developed. It was scientifically demonstrated that dosages and volumes of Oxygen-Ozone must fall within certain parameters to simultaneously achieve resolution of the pathological picture and substantial absence of side effects.
In 1994, Dr. Matteo Bonetti decided to pursue spinal interventional surgery, a field in many ways still open to experimentation. He learned about ozone as an effective remedy for the treatment of herniated and protruding discs, and although there was still a lack of adequate literature, the results obtained were incredible. There were not many pioneers of the technique at the time, so Bonetti decided to visit Dr. Verga in Bergamo to understand what it was and how it worked. Basically what he noticed was that patients were doing well, but it was still unclear why. Verga was infiltrating patients with ozone, with no radiological baseline parameters. We could say it was still a “crude,” unrefined approach, but the results in themselves were astounding.
Bonetti then decided to use ozone, but tried to refine the technique as much as possible, noting remarkable healing properties. Clearly, he began to wonder through what mechanisms of action ozone allows such benefits to be achieved in a very short time. It was at that point that he introduced the use of CT and perform guided infiltrations: this allowed him to understand what therapeutic principles and through what modalities ozone allows such benefits.
The scientific world, it is divided. Numerous criticisms of the practice followed over the years, all of which have fallen away, confirming, instead, the therapeutic properties of ozone. CT-guided infiltration proved to be a very effective technique, so much so that in 2005 Dr. Bonetti was the winner of the ISICO award, reserved for the best scientific work devoted to the spine published in an indexed international journal.
In 2007 the need arose to create a project, bringing together the various components (including X-Ray Service), then scattered in different locations. The project finds its new home at the Poliambulatorio Oberdan, the current location where Dr. Bonetti works with his highly specialized and qualified staff. Inside the Outpatient Clinic are several outpatient clinics, specializing in rehabilitation medicine, and X-Ray Service, equipped with multilayer CT and ultrasound. The two activities cooperate synergistically to offer a complete and integrated service.
