Prof. Giusto Pignata

General surgery

Specialist in General Surgery

Prof. Giusto Pignata graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1983 from the University of Padua. He specialized at the University of Padua first in Urology and then at the University of Verona in General Surgery. In 1988 he performed his first laparoscopic cholecystectomy (surgery first performed in the World just a year earlier by Maurat), in 1992 he performed his first laparoscopic colectomy in 1997 he performed his first anatomic lung resection with thoracoscopic access, in 1999 he performed his first esophagectomy with minimally invasive access and in 2001 he performed his first total gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy laparoscopically, in 2002 and 2003 he performed his first laparoscopic hepatectomies and DCPs, respectively.

During the course of his career, he has performed more than 8000 major surgical procedures of which more than 5000 were performed with minimally invasive approach.

He has been invited as an operating surgeon during live surgery sessions at major National and International congresses, and has also become a point of reference for training young surgeons.

He is also an opinion leader for several multinational companies in the health/surgical field.

Due to his enormous experience in the field of minimally invasive and Single-Access Surgery in 2014, Springer (one of the leading publishers in the medical field) published his book entitled “Single-Access Laparoscopic Surgery: current applications and controversies.”

Prof. Pignata has always not performed a patient choice, nominating all his patients for a laparoscopic approach in the first instance, always guaranteeing him the gold standard of treatment for the patient’s needs.

Conversion to open access for minor surgery (appendectomy, cholecystectomy, wall defect repair…) never appears in his case history; the conversion rate for major surgery is around 2% with a complication rate of 4% (values well below international averages).

Chief of the Complex Operating Unit of General Surgery II at the Spedali Riuniti Hospital in Brescia, Italy.

Visiting professor at the University of Belgrade since 2011.

Adjunct professor at the Schools of Medicine of the Faculties of Florence, Genoa and Naples (Federico II).
