Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic technique that provides detailed images of the human body using magnetic fields and radio waves, without exposing the patient to any kind of ionizing radiation. It is used to diagnose a wide variety of pathological conditions because it allows visualization of both the skeleton and joints and internal organs. In oncology it is used for diagnosis, staging, and evaluation of response to treatment of different types of cancer. To perform the examination, the patient is asked only to lie on a couch that is slid into the machine, and to remain still and relaxed for the duration of the examination. <\/p>\n

During pregnancy, the examination is contraindicated or should be performed with special caution and only in cases of absolute necessity, especially in the first 12 weeks. Therefore, even those who cannot completely rule out that they have an initial gestation in progress should have the investigation. Those with cardiac pacemakers or neurostimulators cannot then undergo MRI because the magnetic field or waves produced by the equipment could alter their function. The examination is also contraindicated for those who, following major surgery, have metal structures of various kinds in their bodies, especially if they are in close proximity to vital organs, to prevent the magnetic field produced by the machine from causing displacement elsewhere Typically, these are prostheses, nails and screws applied in orthopedics, but there are also other devices, in use in other branches of surgery, (for example, in angioplasty operations on arteries and veins) made of materials that could make the examination risky. <\/p>\n

Implanted lens prostheses for cataracts or metal heart valves are a reason for contraindication to performing MRI. Recently, new materials, many of them titanium-based, have been developed and introduced into surgical practice that do not interfere with the investigation, but in any case, it is good to report any type of operation undergone in the past. If necessary, the physician may contact the facility where the surgery was performed to ascertain the compatibility of the material used or submit the patient to a preliminary X-ray to rule out the presence of metallic material. Also because of the risk of having small metal shrapnel in the body, even without being aware of it, it is advisable that anyone who has worked as a turner, welder, bodyworker, metallic paint worker or has suffered hunting accidents or been the victim of an explosion inform the operators. <\/p>\n

The duration of an MRI depends on the extent of the body part to be examined but can be as short as 40-45 minutes.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
