Dr. Francesco Zenga, M.D., a specialist neurosurgeon, is Head of the Neurosurgical Facility of Basicranium and Pituitary Surgery at Molinette Hospital (AOU City of Health and Science of Turin). His activity is mainly focused on oncologic surgery of the basicranium, neuroncology and integrated interventions with ultrasound and neuronavigation; CSF disorders (hydrocephalus) and surgical therapy of trigeminal neuralgia. He focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery and treatments for cervical and lumbar back pain and herniated discs.
Dr. Zenga graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Turin with a score of 110/110, cum laude and dignity. Winner of the OPTIME award of the Industrial Union of Turin as the best graduate of the year. Specialized in Neurosurgery at the University of Turin with a score of 70/70 cum laude.
From March 2005 to December 2008, he was Medical Director at the Neurosurgery Clinic of Sant’Anna Hospital in Como. From January 2009 to June 2011 Medical Director at the Neurosurgical Clinic of the Spedali Civili of Brescia. From July 2011 to October 2020 Medical Director with Highly Specialized and Complexity executive appointment at the University Neurosurgery of the Molinette Hospital in Turin. Currently directs the Departmental Facility of Basicranium and Pituitary Surgery at the Department of Neuroscience of the City of Health and Science of Turin.
Dr. Zenga has performed, as team leader/first operator, more than 3,000 anterior basicranium surgeries (meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, clivus chordomas and chondrosarcomas) using endoscopic and microscopic techniques; lateral and posterior basicranium surgery (meningiomas, acoustic and trigeminal neurinomas); neuroncology, including with use of awake techniques (awake patient interventions for control and monitoring of brain function), for treatment of gliomas and astrocytomas and integrated interventions with Ultrasound, Neuronavigation and Fluorescence; endoscopic interventions for CSF disorders (adult idiomatic hydrocephalus); surgical therapy of neuro-vascular conflicts for the treatment of trigeminal and facial nerve neuralgia; classic and minimally invasive spine surgery for spinal canal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and cervical and lumbar disc herniations.
He is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Specialization in Neurosurgery and in Level I and II Master’s degrees at the University of Turin. He has done numerous stays both for study and work as Invited Professor in prestigious European, American and Japanese neurosurgical centers to perfect but also to teach basicranium surgery, endoscopic surgery and neurovascular surgery. He has been director, co-director and organizer of more than 50 practical courses in Neurosurgery and spine surgery. He has served as an elected member of the board of directors of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery.
